State enterprise “Lietuvos prabavimo rūmai” (Lithuanian Assay Office) is authorized institution to perform state supervision of precious metals in the Republic of Lithuania, it is instituted by the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Lithuania .
In 1995, the Parliament passed the law on State Supervision of Precious Metals and Gems of the Republic of Lithuania . The purpose of this Law - to safeguard the rights of the consumers, to protect their and state interests when manufacturing, processing, purchasing, selling, using, safe keeping and transporting, as well as exporting and importing precious metals and gems. Former state enterprise “Lietpraba” was renamed in the same year and became known as Lietuvos prabavimo rūmai, which operated in Lithuania between the two wars.
The main goals of the activity of the Lithuanian Assay Office are:
- Ensure that all articles of precious metals and gems intended for sale in Republic of Lithuania will be examined and marked in compliance with the requirements of the Law on State Supervision of Precious Metals and Gems, state standards and other regulatory enactments;
- Evaluate and improve the control of economic entities, acting in the field of precious metals and gems, articles of precious metals and gems.
- Achieve that all EU tasks in the field of precious metals and gems would be implemented without violation of interests of Lithuanian manufacturers, suppliers, users and state.
Lithuanian Assay Office is the Member of the Convention on the Control and Marking of Articles of Precious Metals (Vienna Convention).
Provisions of Vienna Convention became effective in the Republic of Lithuaniaon 4 August 2004. Articles marked with Common Control Mark of the Convention (hereinafter CCM) coming to Lithuania may be sold in Lithuaniawithout additional control or marking. Lithuaniathereby acquired right to mark products with the CCM. In the same manner, these articles can be sold in other countries, parties to Viennaconvention.
